Saga, Volume 1 - Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples Well, this sure has been getting a lot of attention in the comics world. Saga is the latest comic from one of comics' best authors, Brian K Vaughan, also responsible for [b:Runaway,|234352|Runaways Deluxe, Vol. 1|Brian K. Vaughan|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1172969612s/234352.jpg|3332427] which might be the best straight-up superhero comic published in the 21st century, and also [b:Y: The Last Man,|156534|Y The Last Man, Vol. 1 Unmanned|Brian K. Vaughan|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1349073112s/156534.jpg|151061] which is a science fiction / dystopia epic that actually worked, so you can imagine that hopes were high for it even before he started describing it as "Star Wars for perverts," whatever that's supposed to mean. There's a lady with spider legs who never wears a shirt, if that's your thing. And it's won three Eisners and been nominated for a Hugo, if awards are your thing.

There are two different strains of great comic books happening this decade, btw. The first is made up of people like [b:Alison Bechdel|38990|Fun Home a Family Tragicomic.|Alison Bechdel|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1327652831s/38990.jpg|911368] and [b:Chris Ware,|13573235|Building Stories|Chris Ware|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1336846329s/13573235.jpg|19154202] who are using comic sequential storytelling to make literature. The second is people like Brian Vaughan and [b:Robert Kirkman|138398|The Walking Dead, Vol. 1 Days Gone Bye (The Walking Dead, #1)|Robert Kirkman|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1327882987s/138398.jpg|30474], who are just making great comic books. I like both, but they're different to me. I might like this way better, just 'cause comics, whee!

Anyway, so...Saga is fantasy / scifi, and I don't usually like those things, and I don't like this as much as Runaways. (Which is unfair, because I like very few things as much as I like Runaways.) But for what it is it's very good. Vaughan's imagination is on display more than I've ever seen it before; he's now up there with [b:Matt Fraction|573564|Casanova Luxuria (Casanova, #1)|Matt Fraction|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1299137259s/573564.jpg|560577] for crazy ideas. And it's a grown-up book that deals with grown-up issues in grown-up ways, for real, so that's cool. And he's basically imported pubescent chunk of awesomeness Molly Hayes from Runaways as a ghost with her intestines hanging out, and there's nothing in the world that couldn't do with a little more Molly Hayes.

So: sure, yeah. If you're interested in the state of quality comics, you should check in on Saga. If you like fantasy / scifi stuff, you'll probably like this quite a bit. And if topless ladies with spider legs is your thing, you and Brian Vaughan have a lot to talk about.
